Mu'ezza

It is little known that the Prophet himself had a favorite cat called Mu'ezza and in a famous incident he showed charming kindness by not even disturbing the sleep of the cat.

On one occasion as he was preparing himself to leave his house and lead the prayer in the Grand Mosque, as he went to get his cloak he found that Mu'ezza was sleeping on one of the sleeves so instead of disturbing the cat, he cut the garment and left the sleeve. He went out to lead the prayer and upon returning Mu'ezza awoke and bowed to him and in return The Prophet stroked him.

Some may say that we have heard that Muslims despise dogs, this is a misconception. Muslims love all creatures and we even find that the word 'dog' occurs in the Quran at least five times ; one of which talks about a group of pious youth who fled from persecution to the mountains along with their dog.

Allah says in the Quran: "And you would think them awake, while they were asleep. And We turned them to the right and to the left, while their dog stretched his forelegs at the entrance. If you had looked at them, you would have turned from them in flight and been filled by them with terror." (Quran 18: 18)

In concluding we must understand that Ramadan is a month for increased worship and turning towards Allah the Creator of all things. However it is not possible to truly worship and submit to the Creator without showing kindness to his creations.

If you decide to buy a pet for your child or loved one, please remember that a pet is for life, not just for Eid.
